Accenture, a leading global professional services company, has announced the appointment of Alan Jope, the CEO of Unilever, to its Board of Directors, effective immediately. The news was met with widespread interest and speculation as to how Mr. Jope's extensive experience in the consumer goods industry will contribute to Accenture's ongoing growth and success.
Julie Sweet, Chair and CEO of Accenture, praised Mr. Jope as a "dynamic leader" with extensive expertise in the consumer goods industry and a deep understanding of driving change through sustainable business practices. She emphasized that he will bring valuable perspective and insight to Accenture's board and company as they continue to execute their strategy and create value for all stakeholders.
As part of the appointment, Mr. Jope will serve on the board's Nominating, Governance & Sustainability Committee. This is a significant role as it is responsible for identifying potential new directors, overseeing board and executive succession planning, and ensuring Accenture's sustainability commitments are met.
With the appointment of Mr. Jope, Accenture's board now consists of 10 directors, nine of whom are external and independent. Ms. Sweet is the board's only internal director, which emphasizes the importance of having an external and independent viewpoint on the board.
Mr. Jope brings a wealth of experience to the role of director at Accenture. As CEO of Unilever, he is responsible for leading one of the world's largest consumer goods businesses, with a presence in over 190 countries and serving an estimated 3.4 billion people every day. He joined Unilever in the UK in 1985 and has held various leadership roles, including President of the Beauty & Personal Care Division. He has also worked in leadership roles in North America and Asia for 14 and 13 years, respectively.
Mr. Jope holds a BA Hons in Commerce from Edinburgh University and graduated from Harvard Business School's General Management Program in 2001. Recently, he was appointed Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford.
