United Airlines Pilots to Stage Nationwide Strike for Higher Pay

United Airlines Pilots Prepare Nationwide Strike for Higher Pay After Four Years of No Raises in Contract Negotiations

May 12, 2023

Pilots from United Airlines are set to hold a nationwide strike on Friday to demand higher pay after working without a raise for over four years. The United Airlines pilots have been in negotiations with the airline management for a new contract, which has been the cause of disagreement between both parties. The picket lines come on the heels of recent strike authorization votes by pilots at American Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

Coast-to-Coast Protests

The United Airlines pilots are set to march on picket lines at major airports across the country. The protests will be held at ten airports, from Newark to Los Angeles. The pilots' goal is to demand higher pay and better work-life balance, a key factor in their negotiations with United Airlines management.

Match or Beat Delta’s Pay Rates

Pilots from all three carriers, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines, are seeking to match or beat the deal that Delta Air Lines reached with its pilots earlier this year. Delta's contract increased pay rates by 34% over four years. United Airlines has proposed to match the Delta increase, but this might not be enough for a deal.

Leeway for Strikes is Limited

Under U.S. law, airline and railroad workers cannot legally strike until federal mediators determine that further negotiations are pointless. Even if strikes happen in the next few months, during summer vacation when millions of Americans are expected to fly, there is a no-strikes "cooling-off" period, during which the White House and Congress can block a walkout. Despite these limitations, unions believe the strike votes give them leverage during bargaining.

The Strike Vote Gives Unions Leverage

The recent strike authorization votes by pilots at American Airlines and Southwest Airlines have given unions leverage during bargaining. Pilots' unions are in a strong bargaining position because of a shortage of pilots. However, United Airlines management believes the industry-leading deal they have put on the table for their world-class pilots is a fair one and they are continuing to work with the Air Line Pilots Association to reach a resolution.
