Chipotle launches Autocado robot to handle guacamole prep, speeding up production and cutting costs amid labor shortages.
Sectors & Industries
Meet Autocado, Chipotle’s new robot designed to handle the tedious tasks of guacamole prep, like cutting, coring, and peeling avocados. Chipotle isn’t cutting jobs though – employees will still mash the avocados and mix in the ingredients to keep that signature flavor.
With labor shortages in the restaurant industry, this robot is Chipotle’s answer to speeding things up. Right now, making a batch of guac can take an hour, but Autocado could cut that time in half, potentially saving the chain millions in food costs.
Chipotle partnered with California robotics startup Vebu Labs to design this machine specifically for their needs, and they’ve even invested in Vebu as part of a $50 million venture fund called Cultivate Next.
And there’s more – Chipotle is already testing another robot, Chippy, which uses AI to make tortilla chips. Up next? Dishwashing robots could be on the way! Chipotle is just one of many fast-food chains turning to automation to streamline their kitchens.
