The Progressive Corporation (NYSE: PGR) reported June and second-quarter 2026 results, with quarterly earnings above expectations, higher premiums, increased policy count, and continued underwriting profitability.

Progressive is an insurance holding company that provides personal auto, commercial auto, motorcycle, boat, recreational vehicle, homeowners, and other insurance products.

The company reported quarterly earnings of $5.67 per share available to common shareholders, above estimates of $4.58, representing a 23.8% earnings surprise. No reported revenue figure was shown in the dashboard, but Progressive reported quarterly net premiums earned of $21.57 billion.

Results Showed Higher Quarterly Earnings

For the second quarter, net premiums written increased 5% to $21.08 billion.

Net premiums earned increased 6% to $21.57 billion.

Net income increased 4% to $3.31 billion, compared with $3.18 billion in the prior-year quarter.

Per-share earnings available to common shareholders rose 5% to $5.67, compared with $5.40 a year earlier.

The combined ratio was 87.3, compared with 86.2 in the prior-year quarter. A lower combined ratio is better, and Progressive remained profitable on underwriting despite the 1.1-point increase.

June Results Were Weaker

For June alone, net premiums written increased 3% to $6.77 billion.

Net premiums earned increased 2% to $7.10 billion.

Net income fell 31% to $779 million, compared with $1.12 billion a year earlier.

Per-share earnings available to common shareholders fell 30% to $1.34 from $1.91.

The June combined ratio worsened to 90.0 from 86.6, reflecting lower underwriting profitability for the month.

Policies in Force Continued to Grow

Progressive ended June with 40.09 million total policies in force, up 7% from a year earlier.

Personal Lines policies increased 8% to 38.86 million.

Agency auto policies increased 8% to 11.21 million, while Direct auto policies increased 10% to 16.72 million.

Special lines policies increased 7% to 7.30 million, Property policies increased 1% to 3.63 million, and Commercial Lines policies increased 3% to 1.23 million.

Market Focus

Investors are likely watching premium growth, policy count growth, combined ratio trends, claims costs, realized investment gains and losses, personal auto demand, and whether underwriting profitability remains strong.

The quarterly earnings beat was positive, but the weaker June comparison and higher combined ratio may remain key points to monitor.

The Bigger Picture

Progressive’s second quarter showed continued growth and strong profitability.

Premiums increased, total policies in force rose 7%, and quarterly earnings topped expectations. The company also remained underwriting profitable, with a combined ratio below 90 for the full quarter.

The main caution was June. Monthly net income declined, per-share earnings fell, and the combined ratio moved higher from the prior-year period.
